How do I eliminate the category folder in the url in wordpress for better SEO?

E.g. I want to turn www.mysite.com/category/whatever into www.mysite.com/whatever .

Go to Settings (bottom left icon on wp-admin) -> Permalinks.

Under the Common Settings section choose Custom Structure and enter “/%postname%/” (without the double quotes) into the text-box and save.

This will make a post titled “How to change permalinks” have a URL of http://www.example.com/how-to-chage-permalinks/
