What is the myth of the iron flute in Korean, Chinese or Japanese history?
I am reading a book of poems called Lotus Flower Poems by Ven. Dr. SEO Kyung Bo, who has a Korean Zen master. In a poem or two he mentions that he played on his iron flute. I do not get the image. Of course I have a thought or two, but would rather learn more about it.
The image of an “iron flute” appears throughout the Zen traditions (known in China as “Chan” and in Korea as “Seon”).
It most often appears in the form of a “koan” – a short puzzling story that can rarely be understood through rational examination.
In a Zen interview, the Zen master will ask the student: “How do you play an iron flute?”
Other versions of this question include, “How do you play a flute with no holes?”
In the Zen traditions, these questions are considered “attack koans” – questions that “attack” the student’s belief in themselves. The master uses them to test the student’s stability.
A weak student will attach to the question and try to play an unplayable flute. However, a storng student will respond to the teacher with an attack of her own.
An enlightened being can freely play an iron flute – however the rest of us struggle even to pick up such an instrument.
