Word Rates
If you want good English writing, again, you need a good English writer. That’s sort of the moral of the story for today. But, you should also make sure that, amongst all the good English companies out there, you’re going with one that can back it up. So, look for word rates in the two to three cents range. At a penny or so per word, you can expect to get just what you pay for. Most qualified companies will charge about two or three cents a word.
Read some Samples
You absolutely need to look at some samples. Make sure their actual writing is up to snuff, that it reads well, that it provides good, readable content. Put it through copyscape and make sure it’s not plagiarized, etc. Just check all your angles when looking at samples, and most importantly: If you find it boring or hard to read, your readers will, too. You’re putting your company’s name on this stuff, so don’t risk your reputation.
Email Correspondence
You’ll be doing business via email, so you’ll want to see how they conduct themselves there. Are they polite and courteous? Can they give you straight answers to all your questions? If they can barely write a legible email, chances are they can’t write SEO too good, neither. Look for well written emails if you want well written articles.
Recommendations
Always look for references. Look for recommendations to see which dogs are the top of the food chain. While you’re at it, feel free to remember the places you got those recommendations so that you can give the writers a positive (or negative) review based on your experiences working with them.
Category of Project
Different companies specialize in different types of writing. A simple SEO article is easy to get from just about anyone, but not all companies do academics, eBooks, reviews, blogs or ghost writing. Find a company that specializes in what you need done, because they probably know that type of writing about as well as anyone.
Rewriting
Most qualified companies will offer a plan that includes two or three rewrites in the package. This isn’t because their writers are no good, it’s because there’s never a guarantee that the first article will be one hundred percent satisfactory. So make sure that, whoever you hire, they’re willing to do a rewrite or two in order to get you exactly what you want. Look all around, look for samples of every type, and find a company that knows every angle of what you want done.
The Pay
Typically, you pay half up front, and half upon completion, or else you pay in thirds. You probably don’t want to go with a company that has you paying everything up front before they’ve shown you any work.
